DRAGONS HUFF AND PUFF;

FERN CREEK STEALS THE GAME AWAY, 24-0

Fern Creek – One week after it appeared that the South Oldham Dragons had discovered their offense, Brian Schutte’s squad once again found itself unable to hold onto the ball or generate any points, and the result was a mirror-image of Week 1 – a 24-0 loss.

Unofficially, the Dragons mustered just 48 yards in total offense, the second time this season they managed less than 100 yards in offense in a game. This time the running game took the hit, as the aggressive Fern Creek defense bottled up the Dragon runners. One week after rushing for 158 yards against Seneca, Chris Moran carried nine times for a (-1) yard, and the entire team netted just two yards rushing on eighteen carries.

As a result, the Dragon defense – which is really showing signs of being a top-notch unit – spent extra time on the field.

Worse, the Dragons continued their three-game trend of giving the ball away. South turned the ball over a season-high six times (three fumbles and three interceptions). They fumbled the ball to the Tigers on the South 21, the South 23, and the South 30. The first fumble set up a LeRon Griffin 6 yard touchdown midway through the first period that put Fern Creek up, 6-0.

The second quarter told the tale of this game. After a defensive first period which ended with Fern Creek leading, 6-0, South started the second period in promising fashion.

Having been held without a first quarter first down (the Dragons ran only 8 plays from scrimmage in the first quarter), South had the ball to start the second period and got their first first down with 10:30 to go in the half. But the drive fizzled quickly, and after a Dragon punt, the Tigers drove for their second touchdown of the night, a one yard quarterback keeper by Wil Jacobs. The two-point conversion run failed, and the Tigers led, 12-0.

But South fumbled the ball back to Fern Creek at their own 30. The Tigers moved quickly to the South one yard line, only to cough up the ball on their only turnover of the night. A South Oldham interception, however, returned the favor and gave Fern Creek the ball again at the Dragon 23 hyard line. Moments later, Eric Bole made it 15-0 with a 33 yard field goal.

That looked to be the halftime score, but the Dragons – trying to make something happen on what looked to be the last possession of the half – threw another interception. It was their fifth turnover of the first half and the Tigers took over at the South 27 with less than a half-minute to go.

It only took two plays for Fern Creek to score. A nineteen yard pass completion to sophomore Mario Urrutia took the ball to the nine, and on the next play, quarterback Wil Jacobs found Urrutia for a nine-yard score with 8.8 seconds left in the half. Bole’s kick made it 22-0 at the half.

Fern Creek played keep-away in the second half. The Tigers opened the second half with a time-consuming drive that died in Dragon territory, ending on downs at the South 25 yard line. The Dragons managed a couple of first downs on their opening possession of the half, before punting the ball away just before the end of a scoreless third quarter.

In all, South managed just 14 plays from scrimmage in the second half. Fern Creek, on the other hand, was succeeding at killing a lot of the clock as they controlled the ball throughout the second half.

The only second half scoring came with just 1:59 to go, when South quarterback Matt Kusnir was sacked in the endzone for a safety.

NOTES:

After turning the ball over six times and forcing only one take-away, the Dragons are (-11) in the takeaway to turnover department. After just twelve quarters of play, the Dragons have committed eleven fumbles and thrown four interceptions.
