HAMMER TRIMBLE COUNTY, 62-39
Buckner, KY – Oldham County’s Lady Colonels rebounded nicely from their disappointing 40-39 defeat at the hands of Top-10 Shelby County last Friday, whipping an outmanned Trimble County squad by 23 points in a blowout that could have been much worse.
Facing the team that will carry the number two seed into the 31st District Tournament (which will be played at Trimble County), the Lady Colonels looked to rebound after losing a game they felt they should have won last Friday against the Lady Rockets. The victory didn’t appear to be a given, despite Trimble’s pedestrian 7-10 record. The Lady Raiders finished 16-9 last season and returned three starters, including their top two scorers. And among their ten losses was a narrow 53-46 loss to Shelby and a close 51-43 loss to Region 5 powerhouse Central Hardin. The Lady Raiders had also lost two other games by two and three points, respectively.
But in the game that may have been a preview of the 31st District Championship, the Number One Seed jumped in front early and never looked back.
The two teams swapped baskets to open the game, with Trimble leading, 5-4, just three minutes into the contest following a Nicky Draque bucket. But the Lady Colonels put the defensive clamps on the visitors from Bedford, holding them scoreless for approximately 8 minutes. Trimble didn’t score again until Draque hit a shot with just 5:41 to go in the first half.
Between the two Draque baskets, Oldham County reeled off eighteen unanswered points, pounding out to a 22-5 lead. After Draque made it 22-7, Oldham’s Amy Middleton hit a running jumper in the lane and Draque answered with her third basket. Any thoughts of Trimble getting untracked, however, disappeared as Oldham County ran off eight straight points to dispel any doubts about the outcome at 32-9.
The Lady Raiders got a little offense – all from Draque and Beth Wagner – to end the half, but still trailed, 37-15, at the intermission. At that time, Draque had 8 of Trimble’s 13 points, and Wagner had the other 5. On the other hand, eight Lady Colonels had scored, led by senior Brandi Miller’s 16.
Miller, as usual, was everywhere. She hit 7 of 13 first half shots and two of two free throws. She was all over the boards, both offensively and defensively. On the defensive end, she was a major reason why Trimble turned the ball over 18 times; 11 times in the first half.
A particularly impressive halftime stat was the Lady Colonel free throw shooting: Oldham hit 10 of 12 first-half free throws for 83.3%, whereas Trimble hit just 2 of 4.
Oldham County took a couple of minutes to get going in the third period, but Trimble continued to struggle offensively, and could just score two points during the same period on a basket by Lindsey McGuire, who became just the third Lady Raider to score in the game.
With the score 37-17, Miller sole the ball at midcourt and took it in for a layup at the 6:09 mark, keying a 10-0 run – with four Lady Colonels scoring during the run – that left Trimble dead in the water, trailing 47-17. During the run, the Lady Colonel press was utterly devastating, and few Trimble possessions resulted in field goal attempts, as Oldham repeatedly gained possession of the ball near mid-court.
Trimble County’s players appeared to be emotionally and physically spent by this time, as coach J.T. Peniston didn’t have the bench that Oldham coach Todd Gilley had. Nevertheless, after Beth Wagner hit a three with 3:42 to go in the third, Trimble County went on a 14-2 run over the next 7:44 to cut the Oldham lead down to 18 at 49-31 with 4:02 left.
A frustrated Todd Gilley called time out, and the Lady Colonels immediately scored on the inbounds play, with Sarah Hadley scoring on the baseline. From that point on, with Gilley substituting freely, the two teams played pretty much even for the rest of the game, with the Lady Colonels hitting 7 of 10 free throws down the stretch. Gilley played fourteen players in all, with eight Lady Colonels scoring.
Miller led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the floor and 2 of 2 shooting from the charity stripe.
