NORTH BULLITT GIRLS, BOYS
Hebron, KY - The games were anything but settled at intermission, but in the end, the Colonels and Lady Colonels of Oldham County rode dominating third quarter performances to easy wins over the upset-minded Eagles and Lady Eagles of North Bullitt.
Lady Colonels 61, Lady Eagles 39 - Things started slowly – literally.
Due to the snow falling throughout Kentucky, the officials arrived late
from Lexington, and the first game, which was the girls’ contest, started
about 10 minutes late. When it finally did get started, the Lady Eagles
didn’t.
Oldham County jumped out quickly to an 11-2 lead as the Lady Colonels hit five of their first seven shots. Midway through the first period, Oldham County’s lead reached double digits at 15-5 after a basket by Sarah Gibson. But North Bullitt regrouped and went on a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to one at 15-14. Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, however, it would be the closest the hosts would ever be to their visitors in a game in which Oldham led from start to finish.
Oldham County went on a 6-0 run to end the period up, 21-14, then pushed it to 25-14 early in the second period after baskets by Brandi Miller and Eryn Jacobson. After a free throw by Lauryn Hatchett of North, Miller gave Oldham their biggest lead of the first half at 27-15. But North went on a 6-2 run of their own to end the first half, and after Whitney Lee scored to start the second half, the underdog Lady Eagles trailed the #8 Lady Colonels by only six points at 29-23.
But the Lady Colonels had come out of the locker room with their business faces on, and after the Lee basket, the clinic began. The Lady Colonel defense completely snuffed out the Lady Eagle offense, holding the North Bullitt squad without a field goal for nearly 12 minutes. North didn’t score from the field until Melanie Keith hit a three pointer with only 3:57 left in the game.
During that span of time, North Bullitt’s only point came from a free throw by Courtney Wooldridge with 5:49 to go in the third.
That free throw ended an 8-0 Oldham run that had ballooned the lead to 14 points, but it was followed by an incredible 20-0 run that didn’t end until only 3:57 remained in the game, with Oldham County on top, 57-24. During the combined 28-1 burst, seven Lady Colonels scored.
With coach Todd Gilley substituting freely the rest of the way, North Bullitt actually outscored Oldham, 15-4, over the final 3:57, including the last seven points of the contest. But the damage was done and the Lady Colonels improved to 13-3 on the season with a convincing 61-39 win. North Bullitt fell to 5-11.
Eryn Jacobson led the Lady Colonels with 19 points. She scored in all four quarters, on free throws, putbacks, and three pointers. Miss Basketball candidate Brandi Miller added 16 and did not miss a shot from the field on 7 of 7 shooting from the floor.
